Note of Explanation

In the Spring of 2003 I contacted Mary Ann Daughdrill through the help of her mother Nell Lowe. Mary Ann had purchased a Victorian Photo Album in an antique shop which included photographs of my husband's gg-grandparents, Rev William Biesemeier and his wife Hermine Gassman. From the family information that I have, I will share a few insights on some of the people in this album. Pamela Hutchison Garrett

My best guess is that this album belonged to Emmert Gassman who was born on the 2nd of August 1905 in Stephenson county Illinois. Most of the photo descriptions appear to have been written by him. His mother probably passed down the album to him. Emmert Gassman was the son of Alfred F Gassman (1868-1920) and Louise Staderman (born 1875), who married on the 16th of April 1896 in Stephenson county Illinois. He had one sister, Vera Gassman, who married Dana Ogden of Illinois.

Several of the pictures may be of Emmert Gassman, but I don't feel certain that the photo type and clothing styles match up with his birth year of 1905.

Emmert Gassman's paternal grandfather was Charles Gassman who was born about 1840 in Germany and came with his parents, as a young boy, to Stephenson county Illinois. Charles Gassman had several siblings including Hermine Gassman Biesemeier, whose picture appears in the album along with her husband, Rev William Biesemeier.

Charles Gassman was twice married, his first marriage being to Louisa Moeller (Miller). Their only child was Alfred F Gassman, father of Emmert Gassman. Charles Gassman was secondly married to Mary Leseman and had eight more children. One of those children was Josephine Gassman whose photo in the album is identified as "Aunt Josephine Gassman Winter". The album also includes photographs of two distinguished looking brothers, Cord and William Leweke. Cord Leweke was the husband of Flora Gassman, another daughter of Charles Gassman and Mary Leseman.

A lovely photograph of four generations of women gives a good picture of Emmert Gassman's maternal ancestry: great-grandmother Elnora Staderman, grandmother Henrietta Hainke Staderman, mother Louise Staderman Gassman and sister Vera Gassman.

Louise Staderman was first married to Alfred F Gassman in 1896 and secondly to Frederick Prasse on the 14th of July 1926. Individual pictures of Alfred Gassman and Louise Staderman as young people, appear in the album. The photo album includes a picture of Louise Staderman's older sister, Matilda Staderman, who married Mister Prasse. There is also a picture of Henrietta Henke's sister "Aunt Lizzie Heinke", who was born in 1868 and never married.

Check out the Family Briefs with miscellaneous notes on Staderman, Prasse, Hanke/Henke and Leweke.
