Note of Explanation

In 2002 I received this photo album from the estate of Edna Hoffman Bowman, grandaughter of Hermine Gassman Biesemeier. The album was in very poor condition and had no identifications on any of the pictures. A thoughtful study of the album and a careful review of my family records convinced me that the album had originally been assembled by Hermine Gassman Biesemeier, or her daughter Josephine Biesemeier Hoffman. Dating has been challenging, but I suspect that the album was begun in the 1880's and most of the photos probably date between 1875-1895. On this page and seven pages following, you can take a peek at these wonderful photos. I have included my comments on possible identification and will be delighted to hear from anyone who might have further thoughts to share.

Comments: These two photos were mounted identically and were probably taken at the same time. It is likely that they represent a married couple. A photographer's stamp appears on the reverse of both photos: Scott and Becker - 405 Stephenson St - Freeport Illinois. The style of clothing in these two photos appears to be of a slightly older dating than the majority of the photos in the album. They may be dated in the 1860's or early 1870's. Possibilities might be Fred Biesemeier and Minnie Beehrman married 1854; Henry Biesemeier and Louisa Niemeier married 1865; Matilda Gassman and Gus Klaas married 1869; or Charles Gassman and Mary Leseman married 1870. There are many other possibilities. They could be distant cousins or family friends.

Photos of the Altenbernd family are found on page 8 of this photo album.
Photo of "Fredie Gassman" is found on page 3 of this photo album.
