John Biesemeier and Selma Kurth removed to Moorland in Webster county Iowa and were the parents of three sons, Raymond Biesemier, John Biesemier and Glen Biesemier. Selma decided to remove the third "e" from the original spelling of the Biesemeier name and most of their descendants follow that spelling today. John Biesemeier died on the 30th of August 1916 at the age of fifty-one. Some sources give his death in the year 1917. Selma Kurth Biesemeier appears in the 1920 census of Webster county Iowa:

Descendant Alice Buthala-Srackangast supplied many of the vital records included in this report. She has some wonderful pictures of her family branch, but I have not had the opportunity to see them all. She sent me scanned (paper) copies of eleven photos that she has not been able to identify. She states, "I have also sent some pictures that I have that we don't know who they are. Most were taken in Stephenson co, Ill. One was taken in Missouri (Baldwin's Art Gallery, Clarksville, Mo). These pictures were taken from (John's wife) Selma Kurth Biesemier's album so they could be her relatives." I have included these photos in the
Selma Kurth Biesemier Photo Album. It would be wonderful to hear from anyone who might have further clues to their identity.

21. JOSEPHINE S "JOSIE" BIESEMEIER was born on the 15th of August 1866 in Ackerville Polk township Washington county Wisconsin. She was the oldest daughter of William Biesemeier and Hermine Gassman. Rev William Biesemeier was pastoring a German Evangelical Church in Wisconsin at the time of her birth. The family removed to North Grove Ogle county Illinois before 1870 and this was the childhood home that Josie Biesemeier remembered.

Josephine Biesemeier was married to ADOLPH HOFFMAN on the 25th of June 1891 in Ogle county, Illinois. He was the son of Edward Hoffman and Charlotta Krueger. He had come with his widowed mother to America in 1881 and settled in Ogle county Illinois. Josephine Biesemeier and Adolph Hoffman began their married life in Ogle county Illinois but they soon removed to Iowa and lived in the communities of Ruthven and Dickens in Clay county. They moved on to Kingfisher Kingfisher county Oklahoma by 1903 where they lived out the rest of their days.

Adolph Hoffman and Josephine Biesemeier were the parents of three daughters: Ethel Hoffman, Elba Hoffman, and Edna Hoffman. Adolph Hoffman died on the 4th of November 1845 and Josephine Biesemeier Hoffman died on the 31st of March 1952. They are buried together in the cemetery of Kingfisher Oklahoma.

Their daughters all married and remained many years in Oklahoma. They are all named as heirs in the 1961
Estate of Mathilda Brueckner Neels. Further details of the family and descendents of Josephine Biesemeier Hoffman are found in the Hoffman Family Report.

22. SAMUEL JESSIE “JESS” BIESEMEIER was born on the 3rd of July 1870. He was the only son of William Biesemeier and Hermine Gassman to survive to adulthood. In records his name appears as Samuel, Jessie, Jess and JS Biesemeier. He has been difficult to follow, but clues provided by Otis Garrett have been helpful. A Samuel Biesemeier appears in the 1900 Chicago Illinois Census:

1900 Soundex of Cook county Illinois - Chicago 53-755-7-52 1428 Clark Street
Samuel Biesemeier Jul 1870 - Ill
May Aug 1874 - Wisc
Agnus Jun 1897 - Wisc
Francis Dec 1898 - Wisc

This record supplies all the information we know about Jess Biesemeier's wife and children. It appears that this Biesemeier family spent some time in Wisconsin before settling in Chicago Illinois. A birth record located on the internet indicates an Agnes H Biesemeier born in Waukesha county Wisconsin on the 3rd of June 1897.

Otis Garrett told me that his grandmother Josephine Biesemeier Hoffman's only brother was the mayor of
Cicero, near Chicago. In the 1920's Cicero was the headquarters of the infamous Chicago gangster, Al Capone. The city government was, at times, controlled by the gangster element. With the help of Ellen Lempera of the Cicero Public Library, I have explored the claim that Jess Biesemeier was mayor of Cicero Illinois. A list of the Town Presidents (mayors) beginning in 1888, does not include his name. It is wondered if perhaps, Jess Biesemeier served in some more minor position in city government. I have not been successful in locating him in the 1910 or 1920 census, but the 1930 census gives this interesting information:

1930 Census of Cook county Illinois - Cicero District 2096 pg 1
James Biesemeir 59 – Ill – single - lodger - public accountant - father born Germany – mother born Illinois

It seems very likely that this is Samuel Jessie Biesemeier. The birth year and birthplaces for himself and his parents all fit well. The placement in Cicero is of interest. The statement that he is single would raise some question as to whether he might have been divorced. The 1961 Estate of Mathilda Brueckner Neels names as heirs the living children of his two married sisters, but it does not include any children of Jess Biesemeier.

Jess Biesemeier died on the 3rd of February 1932 in Chicago Illinois. His youngest sister, Jonette Bessemer (Biesemeier), died in Chicago three weeks later and family records suggest that they were buried together in a Chicago cemetery. The location has not been determined.

Children of SAMUEL BIESEMEIER and MAY [UNKNOWN] are:
  i.   AGNES BIESEMEIER, b. June 03, 1897, Waukesha co, Wisconsin.
ii.   FRANCIS BIESEMEIER, b. December 1898, Waukesha co, Wisconsin.

23. JOHANNA MINETTE BIESEMEIER was born on the 22nd of Aug 1873 in Ogle county Illinois. She was married on the 2nd of October 1894 to CHRISTIAN BROCKMEIER (Brookmeier). Their marriage license in Ogle county Illinois gives the following:

Johanna Biesemeier Brockmeier died on Christmas Day the 25th of December 1913. She was forty years old and left five children between the ages of five and eighteen. Christian Brockmeier remained in Ogle county Illinois many years after his wife's death and appears there in the 1930 census as a 63 year old widower. Sometime after 1930 he removed to Santa Rosa Cameron county Texas, presumably to live with his oldest daughter, Gladys Brockmeier Kloepping. He died there on the 15th of August 1954 at the age of eighty-seven. He is buried with his wife in the North Grove Evangelical Cemetery in Ogle county Illinois.

Four of their children appear as heirs of the
Estate of Mathilda Brueckner Neels in 1961. Matilda Brueckner Neels was the daughter of their grandmother Hermine Gassman Biesemeier's sister, Louisa Gassman Brueckner.

24. JONETTE BIESEMEIER was born on the 28th of September 1875 in Ogle county Illinois. She was the youngest child of William Biesemeier and Hermine Gassman. She was a "modern" woman, joining the workforce and remaining unmarried. The 1900 census shows her in the town of Dixon in Lee county Illinois and by 1910 she had taken up residence in Chicago, working as a milliner.

Sometime after 1910 she went to work as a secretary for William Wrigley the maker of Wrigley's Chewing Gum in Chicago. She "americanized" the spelling of her name, which appears on her death certificate as Jonette Bessemer. She died on the 26th of February 1932 in Chicago Illinois. She was fifty-six years of age. She expressed a wish to be buried near her brother, Jesse Biesemeier, who had died only three weeks previously. They are likely buried in a Chicago cemetery, but the location has not been established.
