Descendants of Friedrich "Fred" Gassman

Generation No. 2

2. CHARLES GASSMAN was born on the 17th of August 1840, the first child of Fred Gassman and Mary Rosenstiel of Grossfurra, Thuringen, Germany. About 1842, when he was very small, he came with his parents to America and the family settled in Stephenson county Illinois.

A
biographical sketch of Charles Gassman appears in a Stephenson county history book. It gives a good accounting of his life and his family. Charles Gassman was first married to LOUISA MOELLER (Miller) on the 9th of July 1866 in Stephenson county Illinois. They had one son, Alfred Gassman. Charles Gassman was secondly married to MARY LESEMAN on the 14th of January 1870 and they had six more children who survived to adulthood: Josephine Gassman, Alvin Gassman, Flora Gassman, Daniel Gassman, Nettie Gassman and Fred Gassman. Another daughter, Mary Gassman, died in infancy.

Census records give the following details:

The Illinois Death Records indicate that Charles Gassman died on the 9th of May 1916 in Harlem township Stephenson county Illinois. He was about age seventy-five. The records also show a Mary L Gassman who died in Freeport Stephenson county Illinois on the 21st of May 1945. It is not certain that this is the wife of Charles Gassman. If she lived to 1945, she would have been about age ninety-five at her death.

It is of interest to note that in the biographical sketch of Charles Gassman, it claims that he was born in Northern Germany, but the area of Thuringen, where we have placed his birth is in central Germany. In the 1880 census Charles Gassman places his birth in Wertenburg and states that his father was also born in Wertenburg and his mother in Baden. Today's state of Wurtenburg-Baden is southwest of Thuringen.

3. LOUISA GASSMAN was born on the 11th of September 1841. It is not clear whether she was born in Germany or Illinois. The 1841 birth year would suggest Germany, as her family did not immigrate until 1842. But, the 1880 census shows her as born in Illinois. She was the daughter of Fred Gassman and his first wife Mary Rosenstiel. She possibly came as an infant to America and was settled in Stephenson county Illinois. On the 31st of December 1861 she was married to EDWARD BRUECKNER (sometimes shown as Lewis Edward Brickner). The ceremony was performed by Charles Witte, Minister of the Gospel. Three children have been identified: Charles Brueckner, Lewis Brueckner and Matilda Brueckner. The family appears together in the 1880 census of Waddams ts Stephenson co Illinois:

Their daughter, Matilida Brueckner, married Henry Neels and left an estate record in Stephenson county Illinois, naming her many Gassman cousins, nieces and nephews. Louisa Gassman Brueckner died on the 22nd of May 1886 in Waddams township Stephenson county Illinois at the age of about forty-five.

Her parents immigrated from Germany to America in 1842 and settled near Lena in Stephenson county Illinois. She had older siblings, Charles and Louisa Gassman. Her mother, Mary Rosenstiel Gassman died in August of 1846, just before Nina's first birthday. Her father was secondly married to Wilhelmina Henke and she was the mother most remembered by Nina Gassman. Her father and stepmother had seven more children to add to the household. Nina Gassman married WILLIAM BIESEMEIER in 1863 and had six children. She died on the 25th of March 1888 at the age of forty-two and is buried in the North Grove Evangelical Cemetery in Ogle county Illinois. Further information on her family is found under Descendants of Frederick Cord Biesemeier.

5. JOHN HENRY GASSMAN was born on the 3rd of April 1848 in Stephenson county Illinois. He was the first born child of Fred Gassman and his second wife Wilhelmina Henke. John is sometimes shown as "John H" and sometimes as "Henry" in records. He married ANNA BECKER on the 11th of September 1877 and they farmed in Harlem township of Stephenson county Illinois. Anna Becker came from Pennsylvania to Stephenson county Illinois. John Henry Gassman and Anna Becker were the parents of four identified children: Daisy May Gassman, Earl C Gassman, William M Gassman and Leslie Gassman. The census data records the following:

6. WILLIAM GASSMAN was born on the 22nd of August 1849 in Stephenson county Illinois. He was a son of Fred Gassman and Wilhelmina Henke. William Gassman was possibly the first of the Gassman clan to venture away from Illinois. It is unknown whether he married or had children. The biographical sketch of his half-brother, Charles Gassman, mentions that William Gassman "went to California in 1872 and continues on the Pacific Slope." In the 1923 obituary of his sister Emily Gassman Schmidt, his residence is given as Dawson City, Klondike.

The Goldrush in the Klondike region of Alaska began in 1898 and there is a very interesting report on participants in this Gold Rush found at the
Family Chronicles Website. The site includes a list of residents of Dawson City around the period 1899-1900, which was published in a directory in 1901. On the list is NF Gassman, Dawson City, miner. It seems likely that this should read WF Gassman. Did he stay in the region into the 1920's? Nothing further is known.

This obituary was submitted to the rootsweb site for Alamakee county, Iowa by Phyllis Peterson in 2002:
God’s Finger Touched Her and She Slept
Beloved Wife of Rev. E. Schmidt Passes Peacefully Away Following a Protracted Illness
Emilie Schmidt, (nee Gassman) youngest daughter of Frederick and Wilhelmine Gassman, was born in Stephenson county, near Elroy, Illinois, on the 18th day of June 1864. She was baptized in infancy and confirmed in the Evangelical Salem church near Elroy.
On the 4th of May,1887, she was united in marriage to Rev. Eugene Schmidt at Lena, Ill. This union was blessed with five children Arthur of Beardstown, Ill; Mrs. Charles Vehmeier of Lena, Ill; Zelia at home; Paul, at Lutheran Theological Seminary, Maywood, Ill; Mrs. Gottfried Kempf of Chicago, all of whom survive and were present at the funeral, and with the husband and father are left to mourn the loss of a devoted wife and loving mother.
She is also survived by five grandchildren - Luther and Marie Schmidt; Paul, Adelheid and Robert Vehmeier; and two brothers Edward Gassman of Lena, Ill; and William Gassman of Dawson City, Klondike.
The departed fell peacefully asleep in the Lord on Friday evening, October 26th, at 6:15 o’clock after an illness of seven years, aged 59 years, four months and eight days. She was a very loving wife and mother and will be missed very much. She bore her burdened illness without complaint and was always busy in carrying for her loved ones to the very last. She had done what she could.
Her comforting words were "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me."
Ten years ago she and her husband came to Postville to take charge of St. Paul’s Lutheran congregation and the duration of their stay is the best proof of their faithful ministrations. During her years of health she was as ardent in her labors for the upbuilding of the church as she was sincere in her Christian faith. She was a faithful wife and devoted mother, and the splendid family she has reared and given to the world is the most beautiful expression of her fine type of Christian womanhood.
During her residence here such a noble type of woman naturally drew about her a large circle of appreciative and warm friends whose sympathy goes out in unstinted measure to those bound to her by a closer tie.
The funeral was held from St. Paul’s Lutheran church in this city at 1:30 o’clock on Tuesday afternoon and was largely attended by many sorrowing friends. The floral offerings were profuse and beautiful. The services were conducted both in German and English, Rev. R. Neumann, D.D. of Burlington, Iowa; Rev. Geo Schulz, D.D. of Racine, Wis.; and Rev. F. Pieper of Burr Oak, Iowa, officiating.
The pall bearers were Carl Huebner, Albert Zieman, Louis Meier, C.W. Meier, John Palas, and Chas. Hoth.
Mrs. Alfred Vehmeier of Lena, Ill. and Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Klaas of Dubuque were among those from out of town in attendance at the funeral.
Following the service at the church, the family accompanied the remains to Lean, Ill., on the night Milwaukee passenger, and on Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock services were held in that city after which the body was laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery at Lena.

Children of EMILIE GASSMAN and EUGENE SCHMIDT are:

iii.   ZELIA SCHMIDT, b. April 25, 1892; d. July 1974, Miami, Dade co, Florida. Not married.
iv.   PAUL SCHMIDT, b. July 08, 1894; d. December 1978, Mount Vernon, Westchester co, New York.
  v.   ADELHEID SCHMIDT, b. July 31, 1897; d. June 1978, Winnebago co, Illinois; m. GOTTFRIED KEMPF.
