11. ALFRED F GASSMAN was born in April of 1869, the only child of Charles Gassman and his first wife Louise Moeller (Miller). His mother died when he was very young, perhaps around the time of his birth and his father was remarried to Mary Leseman in 1870. He appears in the 1880 census with his father and step-mother. On the 16th of April 1896, Alfred Gassman was married to LOUISE STADERMAN in Stephenson county Illinois. They were the parents of two children: Vera Gassman and Emmert Gassman. Census records give the following detail:

According to the Illinois Death Records, Alfred Gassman died on the 21st of January 1920 at the age of fifty-two. The records of researcher Rhonda Hansch indicate that his death is reported in the Freeport Daily Bulletin on the 18th of January 1920. Following his death, Louise Staderman was secondly married to Fred Prasse.

	i.		VERA GASSMAN, b. December 30, 1897, Stephenson co, Illinois; d. July 15, 1969, Winnetka, Cook co, Illinois. She married DANA OGDEN.
	ii.		EMMERT GASSMAN, b. August 02, 1905, Lena, Stephenson co, Illinois; d. January 13, 1986, Mt Carmel, Wabash co, Illinois. He married LEOLA GOEDECKE August 02, 1959. Mount Carmel [Illinois]- Emmert A Gassman 80, of Mount Carmel, formerly of Lena, died there January 13, 1986 at Wabash General Hospital. He was born in Lena on August 2, 1905, the son of Alfred and Louise (Staderman) Gassman. He married Leola Goedece on August 2, 1959. Until 1959, he lived in Lena, where he was a teacher and principal in Lena public schools for more than 30 years. He also taught at the University of Illinois for one year and at the high school in Mount Carmel and Wabash Valley College. Surviving is his widow. Services will be held Jan 15 at Short Memorial Chapel, Mount Carmel. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Carmel. A memorial fund has been established for Zion Lutheran Church, Mount Carmel. 12. JOSEPHINE GASSMAN was born in January of 1871, the first born child of Charles Gassman and his second wife Mary Leseman. She was married in 1895 to ARCH WINTERS. He was the son of John Winters who had come to Stephenson county Illinois from Pennsylvania. Arch Winters was born in Illinois in October of 1869. He and his young wife, Josephine Gassman, lived next door to his parents in the 1900 and 1910 census of Erin township Stephenson county Illinois. Both men list their occupation as Blacksmith. Arch Winters and Josephine Gassman had two children: Violet Winters and Clayton Winters. The census records give the following detail:

The Illinois Death Records indicate that Arch A Winters died on the 7th of March 1939. It also reports the death of a Clayton J Winters on the 15th of November 1947. This may be their son. Josephine Gassman Winters died on the 15th of June 1966 in Eleroy, Stephenson county Illinois.

13. ALVIN GASSMAN was born in 1872, the second child of Charles Gassman and his second wife Mary Leseman. Alvin was married on the 31st of December 1897 to ANNA PRASSE. She was the daughter of Conrad Prasse.

Alvin Gassman and Anna Prasse were the parents of one daughter, Leona Gassman and the family appears together in the 1910 Census:

Their daughter, Leona Gassman, was married to Arthur Klaas in 1919 in Eleroy Stephenson county Illinois.

According to the Illinois Death Records, Alvin C Gassman died on the 7th of May 1939 in Freeport Stephenson county Illinois. There is also a record of an Anna Gassman who died in 1946 in Freeport Stephenson county Illinois. Researcher Rhonda Hansch indicates death reports in the Freeport Journal Standard for Alvin Gassman on the 8th of May 1939 and for Mrs Alvin C Gassman on the 25th of July 1946.

14. FLORA GASSMAN was born about 1894, the daughter of Charles Gassman and Mary Leseman. She was married to CORD H LEWEKE JR on the 28th of March 1895 in Stephenson county Illinois. The 1910 census indicates:

Cord Leweke and Flora Gassman had a son Vernon Carl Leweke who appears to have been born in 1896. His death as a young man is recorded in the Illinois Death Records on the 19th of January 1919 in West Point township Stephenson county Illinois. Cord H Leweke died on the 7th of May 1935 in Freeport Stephenson county Illinois. No death record has been found under the name Flora Leweke. She may have remarried.

The Hermine Gassman Photo Album includes a picture of a young boy with the caption "our youngest-Freddie". It seems likely that this is Fred Gassman, son of Charles Gassman and Mary Leseman.

Matilda Brueckner Neels apparently did not have children. Edna Hoffman Bowman preserved the papers of her estate settlement in 1961 in Stephenson county Illinois. They give a very thourough listing of Gassman cousins, nieces and nephews at that date. See Matilda Breuckner Neels Estate Papers.

22. WILLIAM M GASSMAN was born September 1887 in Stephenson co, Illinois, and died December 25, 1918 in Stephenson co, Illinois. He married HAZEL AUSTIN.

Records for William Gassman, son of John Henry Gassman and Anna Becker, need confirmation. It is believed that he is the same William Gassman who married Hazel (possibly Hazel Austin) and had a daughter Dorothy Gassman born about 1918-19. According to the Illinois Death Records there was a William Gassmann who died on the 25th of December 1918 in Stephenson county Illinois. In the 1920 census we find the following record:

According to the Illinois Marriage Records, Mrs Hazel Austin Gassman was married to Jacob Hutmacher on the 6th of December 1922 in Stephenson county Illinois.

In the 1920 census of West Point township, Stephenson county Illinois, Delma Vehmeier, age thirty-six, is a widow, living in the home of her parents. No children are listed.

29. LAWRENCE R R GASSMAN was born December 25, 1903 in Stephenson co, Illinois, and died January 02, 1981 in Pecatonica, Winnebago co, Illinois. He married MARY BOEKE March 21, 1930 in Lena, Stephenson co, Illinois.

Obituary of Lawrence Gassman:
Lawrence C Gassman 77, Pecatonica, died at 11:30 am Friday 2 Jan 1981 in Alma Nelson Manor, Rockford, after a long illness. Born in Lena, 25 Dec 1903, son of Edward and Pauline Polker Gassman. Graduate of Lena High School. Received his BS and MS degrees at the University of Illinois. Married to the former Mary Boeke in Lena, March 21, 1930. Mr Gassman came to Pecatonica in 1929 and taught math and social studies until 1948 when he was appointed principal of Pecatonica schools. He continued in that capacity until 1954 when he was appointed acting superintendent of District 321, he became superintendent of the Pecatonica schools until his retirement 1 Jul 1969. For a few years he was in partnership with Al Newcomer in the insurance business. When Mr Newcomer left the city, Mr Gassman continued in the business for a number of years. Mr Gassman was a member of the Pecatonica Congregational Church, also member of A W Rawson Masonic Lodge No 145 A F and A M; Freeport Consistory; and Tebala Shrine Rockford. Survivors include his wife, Mary; a son, Donald, Furlong, Pa; two daughters Janet, Earlysville, VA and Mrs Bill (Eileen) Long Arlington, Va; a brother Elmer, Lena; two sisters, Luella Gassman, Freeport and Mrs Laura Downing, Rockford; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by six brothers and a sister.
Services at 1 pm Monday Jan 3 in Pecatonica Congregational Church, with the Rev R H Hosto pastor, officiating. Burial in Lena Cemetery, Lena. Arrangements by Knapp Funeral Home, Petatonica in lieu of flowers memorial funds have been established for Pecatonica Congregational Church and the Shriner's Crippled children's Hospital.
