[pam garrett's comment] Joseph G Miles appears on the regimental roster for Company H of the 5th Illinois Regiment - Cavalry, along with James Garrett. He likely served as buglar for several different companies. It does not appear that he was killed in the Civil War, as suggested in Otis Garrett's comment below.

Remembrances of Otis Sylvester Garrett, son of Isaac Sylvester Garrett and Margaret Hancock:
Nancy Garrett married a Mr Miles who was killed in the Civil War, he was a Capt. She died in Dallas Texas, had a daughter named Alice who married Mr Cox. Mr Cox was a band leader in Fort Worth Texas. The Coxs had an adopted daughter who married a Mr Hoffman. The Hoffmans had 4 boys and a girl. Otis remembers Aunt Nancy visiting them. Celia Whitchurch Garrett lived with Otis and his family and Aunt Nancy would come (she drew a pension) to visit with her daughter Alice. Nancy talked funny, had a stutter. Otis can remember her making beds and talking to herself.

A note from the 1928 obituary of WT Cox, son-in-law:
. . . He [WT Cox] was married to Miss Allie May Miles, daughter of Joseph G Miles, who was chief trumpeter of the Fifty-Second Illinois Cavalry . . .

Miles - Funeral services for Mrs Nancy J Miles, 82 years old, who died on Tuesday, was held at the home of her daughter, Mrs William T Cox, 4825 Swiss Avenue, at 10 am Wednesday, the Rev Harold Major officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Mrs Cox, wife of WT Cox, conductor of the Municipal Band and Orchestra, is her only surviving relative.
