  • Notes
    • Jacob Van Lear Jr was probably born about 1745, possibly in Pennsylvania. He lived his adult life around Staunton in Augusta county Virginia. The name of his wife remains in question. I have

seen the suggestion that she was Jane Kincaid or Jane Tate, but neither candidate has been clearly proved. I have seen several different lists of his children, and give the most likely here:
      1. Ann Van Lear, born about 1785 (might be the same as Peggy)
      2. Araballa (Annabelle) Van Lear, born about 1787
      3. Jacob Van Lear, born 8 Oct 1789; died 15 Nov 1876, Augusta county Virginia
      4. Sarah Van Lear, born 21 Nov 1792; died 21 Dec 1872, Saline county Missouri; married William Caldwell Davis
      5. Rebecca Van Lear, born 5 Dec 1796; married Walter Davis
      6. Evelina Van Lear; born about 1798; married Abraham Wayland
To this list of children, researcher Russell Reed adds:
      8. Margaret "Peggy" Van Lear, married William McKee in 1803 (several sources call her Ann)
      7. Clarinda Van Lear, married James Tate
