  • Notes
    • Missouri S. Edmonston, daughter of Bazil Brooke Edmonston Jr and Joanna McDonald, was born 9 Nov 1830 in Dubois Co, IN. A letter written in 1839 by her grandfather B. B. Sr indicates that Missouri was going to school to the Catholic priest and he was teaching her the German language. The priest was boarding with the senior Edmonston at the time and he judged him "a regular bred physician and a very friendly gentleman." Missouri married Edward Stephenson in Dubois Co on 18 Apr 1850. Trained for medicine, Edward practiced two years in Crawford Co, IN then moved to Dubois Co in 1845. He gave up his practice in 1847 because of poor health and entered the county clerk's office. After Edward and Missouri married he resumed his practice but again gave it up for farming northeast of Jasper. An uncompromising Democrat, he served five terms as County Treasurer and was prominently mentioned at one time for State Treasurer. In 1853 he was commissioned by the Governor to be treasurer of the Indiana Swamp Land Fund. Edward and Missouri had ten children, but only three survived to the time of the writing of Goodspeed's History of Dubois Co: Theodore, Edward E, and Solon. After Missouri died in Dec 1872 he returned to Jasper. Many of the family are now buried in Jasper Fairview Cemetery.
