Descendants of Edward Hoffman
Generation No. 1
1. EDWARD HOFFMAN was probably born between 1820 and 1840 in Germany. Family members
claim that the name was actually Von Hoffman or was perhaps spelled as Hoffmann. Edward
Hoffman married CHARLOTTA F KRUEGER about 1860 in Germany. He is confirmed as the father
of Hulda, Adolph and Amanda Hoffman from two sources. The Illinois Statewide Marriage
Index names the parents of Amanda Hoffman as Edward and Schalott Hoffman, at the occasion
of her marriage to Harrison Coffman in 1889. The obituary of Adolph Hoffman (1945,
Kingfisher Oklahoma) names his parents as Mr and Mrs Edward Hoffman. Family stories
suggest that Edward Hoffman died in Germany before his widow and children came to the
United States in 1881. I am not certain that this is correct. There are several Hoffmans
living in close proximity to the Edward Hoffman family in Ogle county Illinois who may be
relations of some sort. Did they encourage Charlotte Hoffman and her family to come to
the United States?
See notes on The "Other" Hoffmans.
Further research is needed on Edward Hoffman.
CHARLOTTA F KRUEGER was born February 19, 1830 in New Erback, Brandenbergh, Germany, and died September 08, 1893 in Adeline, Ogle county, Illinois. Very little is known about Charlotta, mother of Hulda, Adolph and Amanda Hoffman. Her name also appears as Sharlotta and Schalot. Researcher, Karen Wolbor, located and sent me a copy of her obituary from a Ogle county Illinois newspaper near the time of her death in Sept 1893. The obituary confirms that she was born in New Erbach, Brandenbergh, Germany on the 11th of March 1830; came to America in 1881; married secondly Martin Gritzmacher; died in Adeline, Ogle county Illinois; and was buried in the Adeline Cemetery on the 8th of September 1893. It is unclear whether she was married to Martin Gritzmacher when she immigrated, but it appears that he immigrated at the same time. Martin Gritzmaker appears in the 1900 Census of Ogle county Illinois, living with his stepdaughter, Hulda Hoffman.
Records from the Adeline Cemetery, Ogle county Illinois, give the following:
| Martin Gritzmacher | 11 Dec 1840 - 9 Sep 1900 | |
| Charlotta F Gritzmacher | 19 Feb 1830 - 8 Sep 1893 |
Edward Hoffman and Charlotta Krueger were the parents of three known children- Hulda
Hoffman, Adolph Hoffman and Amanda Hoffman. A note found in a tiny German book from the
library of Edna Hoffman Bowman indicates:
(Dates of Birth - no further details):
Hulda Hoffman 1863 Gebosen den 2 Oktober
Adolf Hoffman 1865 Gebosen den 24 September
Amanda Hoffman 1867 Gobosen den 7 November
Obituary of Charlotta Krueger Hoffman Gritzmacher from Ogle county Illinois newspaper,

Erbach, Brandenbergh, Germany, March 11, 1830. Aged 63 years five months and 27 days.
She came to America in 1881 and to Adeline same year, and resided here since. She became
a member of the Evangelical church at the age of 14 and continued in her faith until death
. . . She leaves a husband and 3 children."
Rev. Biesemeier performed the service in German and another minister performed the service
in English. The following were pallbearers: H.G. Stukenberg, J.F. Blair, John McFarland,
