Descendants of Jacob Rosenstiel

Generation No. 2

2. JOHN ROSENSTIEL was the oldest son of Jacob Rosenstiel and Dorothy Schuetzenmeister of Grossfurra Thuringen Germany. He was born on the 20th of November 1814 and christened Johann Christian Wilhelm Rosenstiel. In 1840, at about the age of 25, John Rosenstiel and his brother traveled to America and may have worked for a time in Ohio and-or West Virginia. Two years later his father's family joined them. The Rosenstiel family settled in Stephenson county Illinois. John Rosenstiel's marriage to Mary Ann Fidler is recorded on 2 May 1845 in Stephenson county Illinois. The census indicates Mary Fidler's birth in both Michigan and Ohio.

According to the census, John and Mary Rosenstiel lived in Harlem Township of Stephenson county Illinois in 1860, 1870 and 1880. The census suggests eight children for the couple: Charles Rosenstiel, William Rosenstiel, Richard Rosenstiel, Mary Lavina Rosenstiel, George Rosenstiel, Lucinda Rosenstiel, Frank Rosenstiel, and Edward Rosenstiel.

John Rosenstiel died in 1890 and Mary Fidler Rosenstiel in 1905. Both are buried in the Greenwood Cemetery, near the town of Lena in Stephenson co, Illinois.

Children of JOHN ROSENSTIEL and MARY FIDLER are:

viii.   EDWARD ROSENSTIEL was probably born about 1869, the youngest child of John Rosenstiel and Mary Fidler. In the 1880 census he is shown as age 16, but it seems more likely that he was age 11. This would then match up with an Edward Rosenstiel who appears in the 1900 census of Jefferson township, Stephenson county Illinois. He is a single man, age thirty-one, born Feb 1869, living with the family of George Collin. This is the family of his sister, Mary Lavina Rosenstiel, who married George Collin.

3. MARY ROSENSTIEL was the daughter of Jacob Rosenstiel and Dorothy Schuetzenmeister. She was born in Grossfurra, Thuringen, Germany on the 26th of December 1818 and given the name Johanna Charlotta Marie Rosenstiel. She was married in 1839 to FREDERICK GASSMAN. Their first two children, Charles Gassman and Louisa Gassman were probably born in their native area of Grossfurra, Thuringen, Germany. A few years after their marriage, in 1842, the young couple made the decision to immigrate with Mary Rosenstiel Gassman's parents and five brothers to America. The family settled in Stephenson county, Illinois. It was in September of 1845 that Mary Rosenstiel Gassman gave birth to her third child, Hermine Gassman, in Stephenson county, Illinois. Mary's time in America was brief as she died in the following year on the 15th of August 1846. She is buried in the Greenwood Cemetery near the town of Lena in Stephenson county Illinois. One year later her husband, Fred Gassman, was married to Wilhemina Henke and "Minnie" took over the care of the three young Gassman children. Fred Gassman and Wilhemina Henke went on to have seven more children.

The record of descendants for Johanna Charlotta Marie "Mary" Rosenstiel are found in the report on the
Descendants of Frederick Gassman.

4. CHARLES ROSENSTIEL was born on the 18th of April 1821 in Grossfurra Thuringen Germany. His given name was Henrich Christian Karl Rosenstiel. It appears that he came with his older brother John Rosenstiel to America in 1840. His father's family followed in 1842. The 1900 census gives his date of immigration as 1842. His marriage to ANNA CATHERINE GILLMAN is recorded on the 5th of October 1843 in Waddams Grove, Stephenson County, Illinois. Anna Catherine Gillman was born in Pennsylvania and came with her family to Stephenson county Illinois from Union county Pennsylvania.

Rhonda Hansch's work on the Rosenstiel Family gives a detailed and interesting account of Charles Henry Rosenstiel, his life and work in Stephenson county Illinois. She credits as her source: "The Charles Henry Rosenstiel Family of Freeport and Stephenson County, Illinois 1840-1983" originally begun by Dr Henry C Rosenstiel and completed by Jane McGinnis.

Charles Henry Rosenstiel followed a slightly different path than his brothers. He was the only one of his brothers to live in Silver Creek township of Stephenson county, Illinois. He probably lived just outside of the town of Freeport. Charles Rosenstiel appears to have been a successful man of business. In 1860 he is shown as a stone mason with an estate of $39,000 and in 1870 he is listed as a manufacturer with an estate of $60,000. In the 1880 and 1900 census his occupation is listed as farmer.

The identified children of Charles Rosenstiel and Anna Gillman are: Matilda Rosenstiel, Charles Edward Rosenstiel, Louisa Rosenstiel, Edwin Oliver Rosenstiel, Jerome Jacob Rosenstiel, and Howard Henry Rosenstiel.

The young couple probably set up housekeeping in Morgan county Illinois, home of the Stevenson family. Henry Stevenson and Louise Rosenstiel were the parents of six identified children: William Henry Stevenson, Edward Rosenstiel Stevenson, Lilly Stevenson, Claire Staley Stevenson, Anna Louise Stevenson and Charles Howard Stevenson. Louise Rosenstiel Stevenson died on the 23rd of October 1899 at Lake Geneva Wisconsin. She is buried in the Diamond Grove Cemetery in Jacksonville Morgan county Illinois. Her widowed husband, Henry Stevenson is shown in the 1900 census of Morgan county Illinois, living in the town of Jacksonville with five of his children in the home.

5. CHRISTIAN "CHRIS" ROSENSTIEL was the son of Jacob Rosenstiel and Dorothy Schuetzenmeister. He was born in Grossfurra, Thuringen, Germany on the 30th of July 1823. Census records show him as Christian, 'CH' and William C Rosenstiel and descendant Rhonda Hansch states that he went by "Chris". He came with his parents and siblings to America about 1842, when he was not quite twenty years of age. The family settled in Stephenson county Illinois where he was married on the 21st of December 1846 to RACHEL AMELIA PICKARD. She was sister to Jane Pickard who later married Christian's brother, Henry Rosenstiel. Christian Rosenstiel and Rachel Pickard are found in the 1850 and 1860 census of Stephenson county, Illinois. By the 1870 census they had moved southward to Champaign county Illinois and were living in the township of Sadorus. Christian Rosenstiel and Rachel Pickard were the parents of fourteen identified children: Adeline Vinetta Rosenstiel, Lucinda A Rosenstiel, Henry A Rosenstiel, Alonzo R Rosenstiel, Susanna E Rosenstiel, Sarah Marie Rosenstiel, Frank Edward Rosenstiel, Matilda Jane Rosenstiel, Edgar Judson Rosenstiel, Oliver Lee Rosenstiel, Albert J Rosenstiel, Lewis Oscar Rosenstiel, Lillie Mae Rosenstiel and Jessie Rosenstiel.

Several of the children married in Illinois. Around 1890 the family began a migration to Sedgewick county Kansas, establishing themselves around the town of Wichita. Most of the children resettled with their parents in Kansas. Some brought their young families, and some married after their arrival in Kansas. Christian Rosenstiel died on the 16th of January 1899 and is buried in the Pleasant Ridge cemetery near Goddard in Sedgewick county Kansas. His widow, Rachel Pickard Rosenstiel appears in the 1900 census, living with her youngest son, Lewis Rosenstiel in Attica township Sedgewick county Kansas. She died the 13th of June 1907.

Rhonda Hansch's work on the Rosenstiel Family includes extensive information on the family and descendants of Chris Rosenstiel, including pictures and delightful family stories. This is Rhonda Hansch's branch of the family.

6. HENRY ROSENSTIEL was born on the 22nd of August 1827 in Grossfurra Thuringen Germany. His christian name was Johann Andreas Heinrick Rosenstiel. He was a younger son of Jacob Rosenstiel and Dorothy Schuetzenmeister. He came with his parents and siblings to America about 1842 and settled in Stephenson county Illinois. On the 20th of December 1848 he was married to JANE PICKARD who had come with her family from Onondaga county New York to settle in Stephenson county Illinois.

Henry Rosenstiel farmed with or near his father as they appear side-by-side in the 1850 and 1860 census of Erie township Stephenson county Illinois. His father died in 1863. The 1870 and 1880 census show Henry Rosenstiel's farm adjoining his younger brother Fred Rosenstiel.

Henry Rosenstiel and Jane Pickard were the parents of seven identified children: Lorenzo Rosenstiel, Loran Rosenstiel, Lewis Rosenstiel, Harlan Rosenstiel, Herman Rosenstiel, Josephine Rosenstiel and Charles Rosenstiel.

Three of the children of Henry Rosenstiel and Jane Pickard remained in Stephenson county Illinois and four moved on to farm in Iowa. Henry Rosenstiel died on the 26th of June 1898 in Stephenson county Illinois and is buried in the Lena Burial Park. He was just past seventy years of age. Jane Pickard Rosenstiel went to live with her daughter, Josephine Rosenstiel Myers, in Cylinder Palo Alto county, Iowa where she died in 1914.

Children of HENRY ROSENSTIEL and JANE PICKARD are:

7. FRIEDRICH "FRED" was the youngest son of Jacob Rosenstiel and Dorothy Schuetzenmeister. He was born on the 3rd of April 1835 in Grossfurra Thuringen Germany and christened Friedrich Carl Ludwig Rosenstiel. When he was a young boy his family immigrated to America and settled in Stephenson county Illinois. His brothers, being a number of years older, all married within the first few years after arriving in America.

Fred Rosenstiel appears with his parents in the 1850 census of Stephenson county, Illinois. It is not clear when he was first married. In the 1860 census of Erie township Stephenson county Illinois he is living with his wife Johanah and two young daughters. The oldest daughter was born about 1853. His aged parents are also in his household. Family records give the name of his first wife as MARY ELLSON and it is not certain if this is the same as Johanah. By the 1870 census of Stephenson county Illinois, Fred Rosenstiel is a widower with six children in his household, the youngest being age one. It has been assumed that these are the children of Fred Rosenstiel and Mary Ellson: Martha Rosenstiel, Anne Rosenstiel, Henry Rosenstiel, Jesse Rosenstiel, Grant Rosenstiel and Fredrick Rosenstiel.

Rhonda Hansch's records mention that two sons of Fred Rosenstiel, Henry Rosenstiel and Jesse Rosenstiel, were judged insane ("half-witted") as young adults and lived out their lives at the county poor farm.

The marriage records of Illinois give two marriages for Fred Rosenstiel after 1870. Both marriages occurred in Stephenson county Illinois. On the 20th of May 1871 he was married to SUSAN BALLIET and on the 19th of February 1877 he was married to HARRIET SPRAGUE. The 1880 census for Stephenson county shows Fred Rosenstiel with his third wife Harriet Sprague and their one year old daughter, M Lenora Rosenstiel. Four children from his first marriage are also in the household.
